Flickinger students celebrate Chinese Year

Students in front of whiteboardMindy Muir and Mrs. Muir wished  Mrs. Mackenzie’s Flickinger third graders Happy New Year on February 5th, with an interactive presentation on the traditions of Chinese New Year.

From Chinese lanterns, to red envelopes (hongbao), A Dragon Parade, New Year’s songs, and lessons on the Mandarin language- students gained new insights and a greater appreciation for the Chinese culture.

“I was thrilled to have Mindy teach us about her culture,” remarked Mrs. Mackenzie. “In 2012 my husband and I traveled with the Macomb Cultural Economic Partnership to China with students from 5 school districts including Utica. I welcome any chance to share my enthusiasm for travel and appreciation for diversity. Kids need to understand how small the world really is and that our differences make us stronger.”

What a great way to start the new year!
