A Utica Community Schools third grader has earned the title of Michigan's chess champ.

Jade Burnham, of Flickinger Elementary, was named the state's co-champion for the kindergarten through third grade reserve section at a state chess tournament in March.

Burham won four out of five games to earn one of the seven championship titles at the Michigan's Individual Scholastic Chess Championship.

The championship, held March 25 and 26 at Oakland University, allowed the state's best K-12 players to compete for the state title in their respective grade divisions.

The tournament was sponsored by the Michigan Chess Association.

Burnham will be joining 275 other regional chess players this weekend for the annual Utica Community Schools Chess Championship at  Henry Ford II High School.
